Two Tips To Help Keep Rodents Out Of Your Home

Posted on: 25 August 2016

If you're like many people, the thought of sharing your living space with a rodent is not a pleasant one.  The mental image of a mouse or rat running across your living room floor may be enough to give you the willies.  That's why it's important for you to do everything you can to keep rodents at bay.  Use this information to learn about two tips that can help keep your house rodent-free.

Have Your Home Waterproofed

One of the best ways to keep rodents out of your home is to have it waterproofed.  Waterproofing is a technique where all of the tiny cracks and crevices in your walls and foundation are filled in with caulking or some other solution.

Although the main purposes of waterproofing is to keep rain water out of homes, it has the added benefit of deterring rodents as well.  Even though it may look like your walls and foundation are completely solid, there could be some gaps there that are letting rodents into your home.

A good way to find out if you have any cracks is to wait until it's a clear evening and turn the lights on in your home.  Walk outside and carefully walk around the entire exterior of your house.  If there are any places where the interior lights shine through the cracks, it's a sign that waterproofing may be the right move for you.

Understand that mice have the ability to squeeze through a hole as small as the size of a dime.  This lets you know that no matter how miniscule the crack may seem to be, it's best to go ahead and have it waterproofed, just to be on the safe side.

Remove Nesting Areas

Another thing you'll want to do is make sure that you don't have any ready-made nesting areas for rodents.  If rodents are in your home, it's likely because they need food or shelter.  All of those piles of clothes that you don't wear, or even those unused appliances that you've stored in a closet or garage provide the perfect place for rodents to nest.  It's best to get rid of as much clutter as possible so they'll have fewer places to hide.

Keeping rodents out of your home doesn't have to be difficult if you just know what to do.  Start using these tips right away so your home can always be that peaceful haven that you can't wait to get back to.
