Here are some easy ways to start preparing for a power outage for proper safety, health and convenience during the blackout.
Keep Devices Fully Charged
It is a good idea to always have devices in your home fully charged. Make a habit of plugging in your cell phone, tablet and laptop computer when the battery is starting to run low, or when you won't be using it for a while. If there is a blackout, you will have access to your cell phone for emergencies, and have some entertainment with your computer or tablet. If the power goes out, try to only use these devices when you need to, especially your cell phone. It also helps to have backup batteries that are fully charged.
Have Emergency Lighting Ready
Emergency lighting is crucial during a blackout, especially if it occurs at night. You will need proper lighting to get to the bathroom safely, prepare food, and keep your children from being too frightened when it is pitch dark inside. If you can get a portable generator for your home, that is one of the best emergency lighting options. Another option is to get some battery-operated lights for your home and make sure you keep extra batteries on hand for these lights. Create a Disaster Kit

Also fill some empty containers with water and place them in the freezer. They will come in handy if you need to keep food or drinks cold following the blackout.
Another habit that is good for blackout preparation is conserving energy. This will reduce the risk of having the power go out in your home. When using the dishwasher or doing laundry, set the water to cold water whenever possible. Unplug devices once they are fully charged, and turn off all electronics that are not currently being used. Make a habit of turning off lights whenever you leave a room.
